Newton - Two hundred fifty pounds is a lot of flounder to cook. Soldiers Reunion co-organizer Ellis Smith figures the least he can do is put on an apron, man the fryers and spend a day serving the 400 to 500 veterans who will show up in Newton later this month.

These are men and women from across the Southeast and some from as far away as California who, like Smith, once put on a uniform and spent untold days serving their country.

Few traditions last more than a century. Newton is home to one of them. This year's Soldiers Reunion, beginning in earnest on Aug. 17, marks the 119th year of events to honor veterans. It also offers up lots of pre and post-reunion activities for Catawba County residents.
