CONOVER - A high-speed chase early Friday morning ended after the suspect crashed the stolen truck he was driving into a yard on Wandering Lane.
The chase began at 1:40 a.m. when Catawba County sheriff's deputy Cpl. Jason Goudelock spotted the 1994 Toyota truck with a camper traveling north on Springs Road near Houston Mill Road without headlights, according to a press release from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.
When Goudelock turned his cruiser around, the driver of the truck, Clifton Griffith, 32, of Conover, sped away down Wandering Lane, according to the press release.
Griffith was driving on both sides of the road at speeds in excess of 70 mph and lost control of the truck, according to the press release. He sideswiped the brick Catawba Springs Development sign, struck additional brickwork and came to rest against a tree in a yard.
Griffith was charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, failure to stop for blue lights and siren, speed to elude arrest, failure to burn headlights, no seatbelt, careless and reckless driving and driving left of center.
At 3:32 a.m., a Conover resident called the sheriff's office to report her 1994 Toyota truck had been stolen and someone had broken into two other vehicles at her residence.
Griffith was later charged with felony breaking and/or entering a motor vehicle, felony larceny of a motor vehicle and felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
His bond was set at $10,000 secured on the felony charges and $4,000 secured bond on the misdemeanor driving charges.
