One of bass fishing's most lucrative tournaments kicks off on Lake Murray today and a Conover man is set to compete for the championship.
The Wal-Mart FLW Tour's Forrest Wood Cup starts today and continues through Sunday. The tournament is the last stop of the series and features 77 of the country's best bass fishers. It is four days of competition.
The full field of 77 pros will fish Thursday and Friday with a top-10 cut being made at the conclusion of Friday's weigh-in. Weights will be zeroed and the top 10 pros will essentially fish a two-day tournament over the weekend for a possible $1 million first-place prize.
Brian Travis, 30, of Conover is a professional bass fisherman and will be on Lake Murray in Columbia, S.C., this weekend trying to win the top prize of up to $1 million. This only the second time in history, a $ 1 million dollar payday is on the line for the one pro who can bring in enough bass to claim the Forrest Wood Cup.
In April, Travis won the Bass Federation Championship in Charlotte.
Six past Forrest Wood Cup winners are in this year's field. They include the Angler of the Year David Dudley of Lynchburg, Va., and 2006 champion Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif.
