For the first time in its 50-year history, Catawba Valley Community College will offer women's basketball and men's baseball.
The college's Board of Trustees accepted a recommendation from CVCC President Garrett Hinshaw to add the two new athletic programs next fall as a way to bring new academic opportunities to students.
"One of the seven major directions in our Strategic Plan is to foster student engagement," Hinshaw said. "This is a great opportunity-something that our students approached us about-that we can provide our students."
Both athletic teams were created as a direct result of student demand, officials said. Hinshaw made the recommendation to the Board based on conversations over the past two years with CVCC's Student Government Association officers.
Coach Jeff Moore oversees all athletic programs at CVCC. Under his direction, both the women's volleyball and men's basketball have been ranked nationally in the top 10 for the past three consecutive seasons. Moore has high expectations for the future of these two new teams, and will be gratified to open the doors of opportunity to local athletes.
"Many of our student athletes would have no way to continue their athletic careers without the opportunities we provide," Moore said. "Not all of our high school athletes go on to Division I or II level play. We hope to showcase their skill here at CVCC."
