Maurice Dupree Murdock of Statesville was arrested for tampering/altering a GPS tracking device, which is a felony.

Murdock, a registered sex offender in Iredell County, is required by the N.C. Department of Corrections to wear a GPS tracking device. Sgt. Chris Nitzu of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office Special Victim's Unit received information on Aug. 21 by the Division of Community Correction from Raleigh that Murdock could not be located via this device.

This required verification by local deputies, so Nitzu and DCC agents went to Murdock's residence on South Mulberry Street, and were not able to locate him there. Two hours after receiving the notification from DCC, the GPS status changed, indicating Murdock's ankle bracelet and the device were in the same location, Nitzu said.

Nitzu said Murdock remained in compliance with the regulations from that point until he was taken into custody, and charged with tampering with the device. His bond was set at $75,000.

Murdock was convicted of second-degree sex offense in Mecklenburg County on July 29, 2002 and received a sentence of four to six years. He was released earlier this year.
