HICKORY - A section of Springs Road was closed for several hours Friday afternoon when a car hit a utility pole near the St. Stephens Fire Department.

Johnny Ed Brown Jr., 48, of Valdese, was at the wheel of the 1991 Mercury when it veered off of the right side of the road and crashed into the pole at about 10:45 a.m.

"The driver indicated that he blacked out at the wheel," said North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. B.K. Sharpe.

Brown and his passengers, Elbert Hensley, 32, and Dawson Hubbard, 9, were transported to Frye Regional Medical Center.

No charges were filed at the scene and none were pending.
