HICKORY - Jim Camero doesn't know John Peyton, but when he heard about his plight and was asked to help with a fundraising event, he couldn't refuse.
"That's just how I was raised. I've been a Christian my whole life and I can't turn down someone in need," Camero said.
Peyton lost his fiancee, Chastity Spivey and his 4-year-old daughter, Taylor, after they were involved in a car wreck in October in Maiden. Peyton's 2-year-old son, "Jon Jon," also was injured in the crash and remains in Levine Children's Hospital.
Camero heard about the wreck from his friend, Greg Scott, who is close to Peyton and his family.
"When it happened, it really touched him, and he asked me if I would help with a fundraiser," Camero said. "I'm a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association, and our motto at CMA is 'Here when you need us,' so I couldn't say no."
The poker run is set to start and end at Blue Ridge Harley Davidson, 2002 13th Ave. Drive, SE, in Hickory. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 with the last bike out at 11 a.m.
Camero said the run will have four stops, the first at Yamaha Kawasaki of Hickory and then three stops in the Maiden/Lincolnton area. Door prizes, donated by Blue Ridge and numerous other businesses, will be given away after the ride.
