The 2004 St. Francis Winery Red (Sonoma County, Calif., $12) is a good value from St. Francis, a merlot leader. The blend is heavy on merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cab franc, plus zinfandel for California spice. The combination makes for a juicy basket of fruit: cherry in color and the nose, with plums and raspberries in the mouth. It has initial hints of oak, smoke and alcohol heat, but, overall, this is an easy-drinking, smooth red. St. Francis makes plenty of more expensive wines, but Red is all you need for steaks and bratwurst.
