I recently received two political mailers from state Rep. Ray Warren. On these mailers were pictures of Mr. Warren and two uniformed Alexander County deputies and their patrol vehicles.
One mailer had the caption "their hands were tied" and expressed the statement that Mr. Warren had untied the deputies' hands to "crack down on illegal immigrants who commit crimes."
As a taxpaying citizen of Alexander County, this mailer begs several questions. First, why are the patrol cars and uniforms, not to mention two on-duty deputies, being used as political props?
Second, did Sheriff Hayden Bentley give his permission for the use of the deputies and patrol vehicles? If so, how can either one, or both of you, justify this improper use of county funds and equipment?
Finally, Mr. Warren, says that he has untied law enforcement's hands to deal with illegal immigrants who commit crimes. Well, since they're here illegally to start with, haven't they already committed a crime?
What have you done to address this growing problem?

The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association, Inc. is composed of officers employed by federal, state, county or municipal governments throughout North Carolina.
Our professional association, funded by membership dues and citizen contributions, prides itself in providing various forms of representation to officers and support service personnel who are members. We also support personnel by advocating changes to improve the quality of work life for our members along with addressing issues through political action.
Recently, Mark Hollo met with us to discuss issues that are important to the recruitment and retention of law officers. Our state is at a critical juncture in this area of public safety.
Each candidate in this race who participated in our screening process was asked a series of questions that sought to develop a broader understanding on how to address these issues in the General Assembly.
Based on the responses on each of these issues, the N.C. PBA endorses Mark Hollo in his candidacy for the state House, District 88.
I ask each voter in District 88 to consider the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect them.
A vote for Mark Hollo will show that you care about their needs.

Jay Adams (Your Voice, Wednesday) asks, "How can anyone deal in good faith with a party of liars."
Mr. Adams, this is precisely why I cannot support the Republican ticket for president. The evidence is solid that we have been misled, spun and manipulated relative to the Iraq war.
To commit our troops to a unnecessary war and bankrupt this nation in the process is very difficult for me to forgive and forget.
I don't know if your assertions are opinion or facts from Hannity and Limbaugh. Most people acknowledge that spin and incomplete truths go with politics and that both parties share equally in the guilt.
Why can't we discuss the issues facing this nation without challenging the intelligence and judgment of people with differing opinions.
If your objective was to influence voter opinion, you failed with me.
