How to survive fantasy football season

Published: September 18, 2008

Hickory - 1. You're going to need some math skills. The game requires figuring out who's going to get more points based on lots of technical info. Don't let it scare you off. A real-world application might make advanced math make sense.

2. It demands more attention than your girlfriend or boyfriend. If you're a fantasy player, you might put a note on your calendar to remind yourself to do something nice for them this season.

3. Don't be surprised if the game requires some cash and some trash talk. Girls play, too but this is usually a dozen or so guys competing. It's best to understand the rules before you start.

4. Know the lingo. Here's a crash course:

A sleeper: A player expected to do better than his value.

A flier: A player who has about a 50-50 chance of doing really well in a given week.

Flex: A position on the roster that can hold several different types of player.

PPR: Points per reception. That's the number of extra points a player gets for catching a pass.
