RALEIGHFinances at the North Carolina Symphony are so low that the conductor made a rare plea from the stage recently for donations.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Friday that the symphony has canceled guest artists and conductors, cut back on pops concerts, called off a European tour and canceled performances requiring additional musicians.
Conductor Grant Llewellyn said it's rare to make a fundraising appeal from the stage but he has to be realistic about the economy.
The 75-year-old symphony is one of about 50 full-time orchestras in the country.
