1. Ian Thomas and e-s guthrie concert
When: 8 tonight
Where: Firemen's Kitchen at Hickory Community Theatre, 30 Third St., NW
Cost: $10
Why go: Spirited songs wrap up the summer concert series at the theater. Thomas' brand of old-time is jaunty and super-fun to listen to. e-s guthrie is an experimental/folk rocker with an inclination toward poetry.

2. Swing dance and lesson
When: 7:30 lesson and 8:30 dance tonight
Where: Neill Clark Recreation Center, 3404 Sixth St. Drive, NW, Hickory
Cost: $5 for members, students, first-time guests and dance hosts (men willing to dance with the ladies) and $8 for returning guests
Why go: Be the bee's knees. CJ Stancil teaches swing dance moves and everybody joins in to cut a rug later. There's also an ice cream social with banana splits.

3. Feverish 5 Game Show
When: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday nights
Where: Hickory Dickory Dock, 25 U.S. 70, SE, Hickory
Cost: Free to play
Why go: Remind your kids you're not as dumb as they think when you take on question categories such as "SpongeBob" or "things adults should know." You'll get real buzzers and other cool trappings.

4. Drexel Fair
When: 6 tonight
Where: Behind R.O. Huffman Center, 700 S. Main St., Drexel
Cost: Free
Why go: The family will have so much fun, no one will mind getting queasy after the funnel cake and Ferris wheel. The Scott Davis Band plays country music tonight.

5. Whippoorwill Musicfest
When: Starts at noon today and 11 a.m. Sunday
Where: Whippoorwill Homestead, N.C. 126, Lake James. (See www.whippoorwillmusicfest.com for directions)
Cost: Donations Friday and Sunday and $10 Saturday. Kids 12 and under get in free
Why go: Spend some time in the sun and check out John Berry of "Your Love Amazes Me" fame, along with Blake Wise, South 85, Jacob and Isaac Moore and others. Sunday is gospel day.
