NC Cherokees adding golf course to attract tourists

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue is joining the Cherokee Indians in opening a designer golf course as the tribe expands its tourist offerings around its Smoky Mountains reservation.
Perdue was traveling to the grand opening Monday of the Sequoyah National Golf Club, which is owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The course was built to a layout created by designer Robert Trent Jones II to take advantage of mountain vistas on every hole. Greens fees are $85 weekdays and $110 on weekends.
The Cherokees opened a casino 11 years ago and use half the profits to run the tribal government and half for payments to tribal members.
