How to survive cutting entertainment expenses

Published: February 12, 2009

Hickory - It's no fun to spend less money. But it doesn't have to be less fun, either.

1. Re-evaluate your cable television. If you're that person who only wants the TV on for background noise and the occasional show, you might do just as well watching the programs available online or through hulu.com. You'll be surprised how much is out there.

2. If that won't work, re-evaluate your Internet. Most of us have it at work. And at work we have breaks and lunch hours to take care of personal stuff. Of course, none of us dilly dally on the Web during regular work hours.

3. Rediscover the library. Books, DVDs and books on CD are all free.

4. Look for discount days or free events. It'll be spring soon and the festivals will be coming. The Hickory Museum of Art is always free and the Catawba Science Center has free Fridays.
