Federal fishery regulators have established no-fishing zones off the southeast United States coast to help protect more than 70 deep-water species.
The eight zones were created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They total 529 square nautical miles and extend from North Carolina to Florida.
Species to be protected include snapper, grouper, tilefish, grunt, porgie, and sea bass. Officials say the species aren't candidates for catch-and-release fishing because they are injured when caught in deep water and reeled to the surface.
There is one area off North Carolina, southeast of Cape Fear. There are three areas each off South Carolina and Florida and one off Georgia.
