Hickory - Completing an eight-year run in downtown Hickory, Rick Cline's Jazz on Tap at the Olde Hickory Tap Room is introducing a new format Sunday.

The new hours will accommodate people who like to eat earlier. Jazz will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. Formerly, the hours were 8 to 11 p.m.

A number of fans suggested the earlier start, said Cline, who hosts one of just five jazz venues in North Carolina. Fans will be getting home an hour earlier, he said, which is important when the next morning is a workday.

Another change will give the Sunday evening music a new twist.

The first half of the jazz evening, which features guest musicians, will remain unchanged. The second half will give local musicians an opportunity to perform by sitting in with the band.

Jazz on Tap created a stir that brought PBS to Hickory to capture the sound and check out a venue that does not charge patrons to drop in for the evening. Cline credits owner Jason Yates with the format changes and has hopes it will win support.

Cline, a Hickory native, is a professional musician. In addition to performing on a regular basis, he teaches at Lenoir-Rhyne University and has directed the Piedmont Percussion program for ages 8 to 18 for the last three years.

The lead drummer at Jazz on Tap, he also at times co-directs the L-R Jazz Ensemble and the university's pep bands. The Pan Jive steel drum band is another of his musical innovations.
