Hickory - 1. Freedom Fest: Have some fun and food with your fireworks. The festival is beside LP Frans Stadium so you can watch the display from the parking lot after getting free popcorn, water and balloons and letting the little ones jump on the inflatables.

2. Tree ID Walk: Make like a tree and "leave" the city behind. You'll learn plenty and help walk off some of that apple pie on this one-mile hike.
Location: South Mountains State Park, 3001 South Mountain Park Ave., Connelly Springs

Time/Day: 2 p.m. Friday
3. Movies in the Park: Talk about the big picture. Newton shows the animated "The Tale of Despereaux" on its outside screen. The free popcorn is provided. You'll have to bring your own chair or blanket.

4. Kool Park Pool: Make a splash this weekend. This Hickory landmark, with its 90-foot waterslide and 3 to 15-foot diving boards, won't close for the Fourth.

Cost: $12 for swimmers 13 and older, $8 for children 12 and younger and seniors 60 and older and free for children under 3
Time/Day: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day through Labor Day
5. Hickory Alive: Social Contraband rocks downtown with classics from AC/DC to Zeppelin, along with current tunes from such faves as Foo Fighters and Audioslave.
Location: Union Square
Cost: Free
Time/Day: Pre-show is 7 p.m. Friday and Social Contraband starts at 8 p.m.
