Don't forget your pets

HICKORY - Animal rescue shelters across the country often become overburdened around the Fourth of July with pets that have run away in panic and confusion after hearing the loud noises of a fireworks show.

Here are a few tips on keeping your pet safe and comfortable this Independence Day:

If your pet stays indoors, turn up the volume on a TV or radio to drown out the noise of fireworks outside.

If your pet stays outdoors, temporarily move them indoors or watch them closely, as animals have been known to bolt out of kennels or break chains and leashes in fireworks-induced panic.

Avoid shooting off fireworks in your yard or in close proximity to your pet.

Don't leave your pets in the car during fireworks shows (or on any day during the summer), even for a short amount of time.

Make sure your pet is wearing identification tags so that if they do escape and are found by rescuers, they can be safely returned.
