Cougars' first game in Raleigh is scheduled at 5 p.m.

Alexander Central meets North Davidson to start tournament

RALEIGH - The first pitch in Alexander Central High's chase for a state 4A girls' softball championship comes Friday at 5 p.m.

The Cougars (28-1), who have won five state titles, meet North Davidson (27-1) for the West 4A title at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex near Raleigh. The game will be on the complex's No. 2 field.

The East 4A title game – New Bern (17-7) versus Fuquay-Varina (20-4) – will be on Field No. 1 and also begins at 5 p.m.

Win or lose, Alexander Central's second game will also be Friday – in the winner's bracket or loser's bracket – at 7:30 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament continues on Saturday with a loser's bracket final at 11 a.m.

The loser's bracket winner will then meet the unbeaten team from the winner's bracket and must win twice to grab the state title. Game times are 1:30 p.m. and, if another game is needed, 4 p.m.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has not yet announced ticket prices at Walnut Creek.

Friday's first round games

East championship: New Bern (17-7) vs. Fuquay-Varina (20-4), 5 p.m., Field 1.
West championship: N. Davidson (27-1) vs. ALEXANDER CENTRAL (28-1), 5 p.m., Field 2.
Winner's bracket final, Field 1: 7:30 p.m.
Elimination game, Field 2: 7:30 p.m.

Saturday's games
Loser's bracket final, Field 1: 11 a.m.
Championship game, Field 1: 1:30 p.m.; if another game needed will be at 4 p.m. on same field.

Friday's first round games

East championship: Pikeville Aycock (25-2) vs. Triton (24-4), 5 p.m., Field 3.
West championship: SW Randolph (27-1) vs. Asheville Roberson (28-2), 5 p.m., Field 4.
Winner's bracket final, Field 3: 7:30 p.m.
Elimination game, Field 4: 7:30 p.m.

Saturday's games
Loser's bracket final, Field 2: 11 a.m.
Championship game, Field 2: 1:30 p.m.; if another game needed will be at 4 p.m. on same field.

West championship: Central Davidson (18-7) vs. Black Mountain Owen (20-6), 5 p.m., Field 9.
