Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for most of the region

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of western North Carolina.

Numerous showers and strong to severe thunderstorms will move into the area from Tennessee this afternoon and evening. Storms are moving at 25 m.p.h.

Heat and humidity are feeding into the unstable air and could produce intense storms with very strong wind gusts, hail and lightning, and a heavy bursts of rainfall.

Counties under the watch include:
ALAMANCE, ALEXANDER, ALLEGHANY, ANSON, ASHE, CABARRUS, CALDWELL, CASWELL, CATAWBA, CLEVELAND, DAVIDSON, DAVIE, FORSYTH, GASTON, GUILFORD, IREDELL, LINCOLN, MECKLENBURG, MONTGOMERY, MOORE, RANDOLPH, RICHMOND, ROCKINGHAM, ROWAN, STANLY, STOKES, SURRY, UNION, WATAUGA, WILKES, YADKIN
