CONOVER - A two-car collision in Conover claimed the lives of two people Saturday.
The accident occurred at about 5:45 p.m. when a Chevy Suburban traveling north on Thornburg Drive, NE, slammed into the driver's side door of a Chrysler LeBaron coming off the Interstate 40 exit and turning onto Thornburg Drive, according to police reports.
"Witnesses said the Suburban ran the red light," said Conover Police Chief Gary Lafone.
The two occupants of the LeBaron were killed in the collision and pronounced dead at the scene, Lafone said.
There were multiple occupants in the Suburban. The driver was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with minor injuries.
The wreck is under investigation, but Lafone said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
"There's no indication of alcohol at all," Lafone said.
Thornburg Drive, NE, was closed to through-traffic for about 2 1/2 hours.
The names of the people involved in the crash were not released at the scene.
