Hickory - FOR SINGLES

1. Michelle Malone: Moanin' Michelle brings her blues to downtown Morganton's TGIF summer concert series.

Location: Downtown Morganton on the Historic Courthouse lawn

Cost: Free

Time/Day: 7 p.m. Friday

2. Dance lessons: They'll give you two steps this weekend. USA Dance hosts country western two-step lessons with a dance to follow. Bring a refreshment.

Location: Neill Clark Recreation Center, 3404 Sixth St. Drive, NW, Hickory

Cost: $5 for members and first-time guests, $8 for returning guests and $2 for students or dance hosts
Time/Day: Lessons are 7:30 p.m. Saturday and dancing starts at 8:30 p.m.

FOR FAMILIES

1. Ice cream eating contest: Brain freeze was never more fun. Ice cream engineers sponsors the contest.

Location: Downtown Hickory Farmers' Market, 232 Government Ave., SW (across the railroad tracks from Union Square)

Cost: Free

Time/Day: Contest is 11 a.m. Saturday. Farmers' Market runs 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

2. Reagan Day Picnic: This one's for the Gipper. You can dunk your favorite politician, enjoy bluegrass from the Sigmon Stringers and country and rock from the Band Masters, munch on free popcorn and more.

Location: Old Newton-Conover Junior High School at the corner of South Ashe Avenue and West Seventh Street

Cost: Free

Time/Day: 3 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday

3. Book sale: Pump up your volumes. This weekend marks the last of the library's book sale until October. You won't believe the deals you can get on books right off the library shelves.

Location: Patrick Beaver Memorial Library, 375 Third St., NE, Hickory.

Cost: Free to browse. Book prices start at just 50 cents

Time/Day: Goes on sale 2/9.
