HICKORY - The Kannapolis Intimidators, who rapped 16 hits Saturday night at L.P. Frans Stadium, went back and did it again.

Kannapolis knocked out another 16 hits to beat the Hickory Crawdads 7-3 Sunday afternoon and went home with a split of the four-game series that opened the second half of the South Atlantic League season.

The Intimidators, 8-7 winners Saturday night, had 12 hits in a 4-3 loss to the Crawdads on Friday.

"We're pitching them up," Hickory manager Hector Ortiz said.

"The last three nights have been poor outings.

"It's nothing we can hide. You gotta pitch down in the zone."

Kannapolis scored three runs on five hits, including a two-run double by No. 9 batter Lee Fischer, off Jake Brigham (2-5) in the third inning.

The Crawdads got within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Matt West, who had two of Hickory's first three hits, doubled and scored on an infield single by Leonel De Los Santos.

The Intimidators increased their lead to 7-2 in the top of the fifth. Jose Vargas, who was batting .186, hit a three-run homer, over the center-field wall, to finish Brigham and end the Kannapolis scoring.

"It (Vargas' home run) was an 0-2 pitch," Ortiz noted. "That's what I'm saying. It's executing the pitch."

Every Kannapolis batter, except Justin Greene, had a hit in the first five innings. Greene, who went 0-for-5, entered the game with a .329 average that was .061 higher than any of the other Intimidators who have more than 10 at-bats.

Josh Phegley — chosen by the Chicago White Sox in the supplemental phase of the first round of this month's draft — went 3-for-4 in his first game for Kannapolis.

The Crawdads finished with eight hits, giving them 22 in their last three games.

"We're not hitting the ball when we have to hit it," Ortiz said.

The Crawdads got only three hits in seven innings against Greg Infante (3-5), who retired the last 11 batters he faced.

Kannapolis reliever Garrett Johnson, a 6-foot-10 left-hander, gave up five hits in the last two innings.

Hickory relievers Cody Eppley and Tyler Tufts pitched shutout ball over the final 4 1-3.

Neither team drew a walk. The Intimidators didn't need any.

The Crawdads next home game will be July 4, fireworks night, against Hagerstown (Md.).
