HICKORY - Kids across Catawba County got the day off school Monday, and were taking advantage of it by building snowmen, throwing snowballs and sledding down hills.

Bethlehem Do It Best Hardware on N.C. 127 sold dozens of snow-related items on Sunday and Monday to area residents who wanted to play in — or get rid of — the snow.

"We've sold some ice melt, but mostly sleds. We've sold six of seven snow boards and probably 60 or 70 sleds since Sunday," said Randy Bock, an employee at the store. "We probably would have sold more if it hadn't rained some Sunday."

Steven and William Warren were out with their dad, Michael, on Monday, sledding down a steep hill in a northwest Hickory neighborhood called "The Loop."

Michael used to live nearby and had good memories of sledding down the hill when he was a child. He drove his children, who are 7 and 4, to the area so they could experience the joy of sledding down part of the 300-foot hill.

Steven, 7, said he'd be happy sledding down it all day. Although he admitted any day out of school was great, because "I don't have to do homework."

Nearby, siblings, Julia, Amy, Levi and Sam Robinson were playing in their yard. Sam, 8, said he found out Sunday night that their school, Hickory Christian Academy, declared Monday a snow day.

"We just got out here, but I want to have a snowball fight," Sam said as he packed a fistful of powdery snow in his hand.

His sister, Julia, 6, was a little more passive about what she wanted to do with her day off school.

"I like building snowmen, but you have to have really deep snow for that," she said.

Julia seemed content to take turns in a sled with Amy and Levi, towing each other around the yard.
