SHERRILLS FORD - Brightly colored children's clothes hang in the window of a trailer at the corner of Bach Drive and N.C. 150. A "Baby on Board" sign dangles from the rear window of the car in the driveway.
At the Sherrills Ford home on Friday, Derrick Mullis, 20, was shot. Law enforcement is searching for the person who pulled the trigger and for the motive behind it.
Mullis was shot once in the back at about 11 a.m., said Chief Deputy Coy Reid with the Catawba County Sheriff's Office. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The hospital said it does not have information on Mullis.
Reid is not releasing information on a suspect and declined to comment further on the investigation.
"(Mullis) was very vague on the statement he gave us," he said. "The other resident was there, but we don't know if they saw it."
Although the sheriff's office is not mentioning a suspect, Brittany Drakakides, the sister of someone who lives in the home on Bach Drive, said Mullis was shot by a person who sometimes comes to visit the home.
"He comes over sometimes, but he's never brought a gun before," Drakakides said. "He had to have known something was going to happen."
Drakakides' sister, Tiffany, stood outside the trailer Friday afternoon, sobbing.
"Why'd he bring a gun?" she asked.
