The 2007 National Association of Letter Carriers' National Food Drive on May 9 was a great success.
Because you cared enough to give to the annual drive, thousands of families will benefit from the 37,325 pounds of food that was collected and distributed to agencies in Catawba, Burke and Alexander counties.
I want to thank each of the letter carriers for their hard work, for going above and beyond the call of duty. I recognize each of you have enough demands without looking for something else to do as you deliver thousands of pieces of mail daily.
To all the volunteers who assisted in sorting the food at Hickory, Conover, Newton, Claremont, Catawba, Sherrills Ford, Maiden, Terrell, Icard, Rutherford College, Connelly Springs and Valdese post offices, thank you for your help.
The following agencies provided volunteers and received food for needy families:
Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry, Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry, The Salvation Army, East Burke Christian Ministry, Shekinah Food Ministries, Good Samaritan Food Pantry, ALFA, Hickory Soup Kitchen and Christian Community Food Bank of Sherrills Ford.
Thanks to John Ybarn and the city of Hickory for the use of the plastic containers. They made our job much easier.
A special thank-you to everyone who participated in and supported this wonderful event.

I am a 78-years-young lady.
On March 15, I decided to start a job for myself. I had only $10 to start it with.
First, I put a small ad in the Hickory Daily Record. Then I bought a small, inexpensive sign and put it in my front yard.
The day the paper came out, I got my first job. I have had four more since then and have four more coming up. I am a living example of what a person any age can do.
There are many things out there such as rent a boat and take people sightseeing around our lake, landscaping new homes or just doing odd jobs. Don't stay home and become a couch potato.
Remember the old saying, "Idleness is the Devil's workshop," and no one was to work there. Have faith in yourself and you can create your own job.
I did it, and so can you.
