NEWTON - Only one incumbent was re-elected to the Newton-Conover City Schools' board of education Tuesday night.

Kyle Drum was the top vote-getter for the Newton district, garnering 438 votes, for 26 percent.

Incumbent Betty Coulter received 24 percent, with 400 votes. Both will serve four-year terms.

"I had no clue if I would win," Drum, 29, said. "I'm just overwhelmed with support from my family and community. I'm especially thankful to my grandma, Linda Sigmon, who stayed at the Newton Library every day during early voting to campaign for me."

Drum spent Tuesday campaigning at every polling precinct. He said he was grateful for the vote of confidence the community placed in him.

"I will not let the children down," he said.

Coulter, 46, said she relied on local support in the field to help her win because she had an illness in the midst of the campaign.

Now healthy, she's humbled by the community's support and ready to get back to business.

"Every candidate who ran was well-qualified," Coulter said. "I'm glad for the vote of confidence. I'm ready to be a servant of the public for another four years."

Kim Cline was the sole candidate to win election for the Conover seat on the Newton-Conover City Schools' board of education.

She received 673 votes for 62 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent Gary Hicks, who came in second with 25 percent, or 272 votes.

Cline, 52, said she was excited about winning. She spent Tuesday campaigning at polls before work, on her lunch break and after work.

"I'm excited about the next few years," she said. "I thank everyone who ran, and everyone who voted, because that shows a community who cares."
