Niland requests dismissal after 5 months on the job.

CLAREMONT - City Manager Patrick Niland has left his position after only five months on the job.

Mayor Glenn Morrison said the Claremont City Council dismissed the 26-year-old Niland during a special meeting Wednesday.

The dismissal was at Niland's request, Morrison said.

"He needed to leave for health and other personal reasons," Morrison said.

"He did a good job for the city while he was here. He's young and energetic, and we wish him the best in his new endeavors."

Niland, who lives in Mooresville, could not be reached for comment.

Claremont named Niland its city manager in June. He had been interim manager for 18 months before that.

Before coming to Claremont, Niland held positions with other municipalities, serving as a grant specialist with Bethel, in the eastern part of the state; a finance officer/county clerk and administrator with Pleasant Garden, near Greensboro; and a code enforcement officer with Mount Pleasant.

Morrison said a committee will be formed to search for a new city manager.
