HICKORY - Catawba Valley Community College is looking to add a new satellite campus in southwest Hickory.

"We were very interested in the area," said CVCC President Garrett Hinshaw.

He and Dayspring Ministries Pastor Dr. Glenn Pinckney Sr. began talks about it a few months ago.

"We started discussing issues we both were facing and we just started from there," Hinshaw said.

Pinckney said he's eager for classes to begin because he knows so many people in the area who need help.

"A lot of people started calling, asking if I knew where they could get a job," he said. "I prayed, and asked if I could get a way for them to get an education. Dr. Hinshaw was interested in a satellite spot in southwest Hickory."

Dayspring Ministries is at the corner of Second Avenue, SW, and Seventh Street. It has a learning center on the same property as the church, although it's not connected to the fellowship hall.

The two-story learning center has 17 classrooms, a large common room with tables, a kitchen and bathrooms. There's also a fenced area where children can play, and child care will be offered.

"We've been looking at this for six months," Pinckney said. "We want to offer people in Long View and southwest Hickory day and evening classes. We're looking at maybe using our church's van if they can't get transportation. We want people to be productive citizens in society. This hasn't happened quick enough."

People interested in taking courses offered by CVCC at Dayspring Ministries are encouraged to contact Dayspring Ministries to tell them what classes they would be interested in, Hinshaw said.

"We're currently doing a needs-assessment," he said. "Based on what the interest is, that will be what the programming is."

When considering what classes will be offered, Hinshaw said CVCC will take into consideration duplication of other courses from other programs nearby.

"We can start as soon as there's sufficient data that there's interest to support a program," Hinshaw said. "Non-credit programs can start anytime."

Pinckney said he hopes classes can begin as early as January.

He said the facility at Dayspring Ministries and its CVCC course offerings will operate much like those at Maiden High School.

"We'll have mostly non-credit offerings, such as basic-skills and special class offerings," Hinshaw said. "To do curriculum classes would take a lot of effort from our professors there."
