Two promoted at police department

Hickory - James A. "Andy" Kerley and Jeffery C. "Jeff" Medley have been promoted to the rank of police sergeant in the Hickory Police Department.
Master Police Officer Kerley currently is an investigator in the Criminal Investigations division, while Master Police Officer Medley serves as a K-9 officer in the patrol division.
Both officers will be assigned to the patrol division as P.A.C.T. supervisors. Kerley will be assigned to CHARLES P.A.C.T. in southeast Hickory. Medley will be assigned to BAKER P.A.C.T. in northeast Hickory. He will serve as the supervisor of K-9 Operations and Training.
"These officers have demonstrated the leadership qualities necessary to advance their careers to the next level," said Chief of Police Tom Adkins. "They are dedicated to making this community a great place to live."
Medley, a Hickory native, attended St. Stephens High School. He is enrolled at Catawba Valley Community College and is working toward an associate's degree in criminal justice. Medley began his police career with Hickory Police Department in 1995 serving in ADAM, BAKER and CHARLES P.A.C.T.s prior to his current assignment.
Medley is recognized as a leader in the area of K-9 handling in the Unifour area and has received numerous K-9 certification awards and was named Officer of the Year in 1999. Medley has been awarded his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and is an active member of the N.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association.
He and his wife, Nicole, have three sons, Curtis, 18, Alex, 12, and Nolan, 9, and live in Hickory.
Kerley is an Alexander County native and received his bachelor's degree in psychology from Appalachian State University in Boone after serving in the U.S. Navy.
He joined HPD in 2004. Kerley served in ADAM P.A.C.T prior to his assignment in CID as a major crimes investigator.
Kerley was recognized as the 2008 HPD Coworker of the Year as well as the 2008 Elks Club Officer of the Year.
He has been awarded his Intermediate Law Enforcement Certificate from the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and is an active member of the N.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association.
He and his wife, Kellie, are parents to son, Eli, and live in Alexander County.
