Welcome NAACP convention

Published: October 7, 2009

The North Carolina NAACP convention is in Hickory for three days of planning, workshops and reports.

We have a keen interest in the reports to the membership on some of the most important issues of the day. Noted professionals and social/political leaders will speak on education, political action, workers and industry, court rulings and the state of civil rights in North Carolina.

The NAACP has labored long and diligently to ensure equal rights and opportunity for all people.

Although it began as an activist group for black people, "Advancement" in the organization's distinguished name applies to everyone.

The NAACP has fought many battles for all minorities — racial, social and economic. There are many people who have been beset with problems because of their racial origin, their place in the social strata or because they are poor and have few resources.

The NAACP has worked to improve their lots and secure equal protection under the law and break down barriers to heartfelt unity.

The convention will have two venues: St. Luke's United Methodist Church today, where delegates will be involved in Religious Emphasis Day, and the Hickory Metro Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, where the focus will be on the state of equality, building on the organization's momentum for those who are burdened with disparity and working on a legislative agenda.

There will also be stories and history on the struggle for civil rights and, we hope, attention to those stories that ended with triumph.

This is a time of sharing, of rededication to the NAACP mission and renewing the commitment to freedom and equality for all people.

All are welcome to any of the events. Daily registration is at both venues.

We would be dishonest to contend that racism is dead and buried, but we are heartened by the advances made in the names of liberty and equal opportunity. There is work still to be done, and we are confident the NAACP will be in the forefront for everyone.

We welcome the convention to Hickory, and we wish delegates an abundance of good will, good times and good works, now and always.
