Hickory - The new
For the first year, a Totally Teen stage will feature the songs and stylings of the area's young musicians.
Teen tunes include country, pop, heavy metal, bluegrass, gospel, alternative, classic, modern and hard and Christian rock.
The Totally Teen Stage, on Second Street, NW, between Wachovia and BB&T, also will feature a XBox gaming competition on the big screen.

The brew
What's more German than beer? Two beer gardens offer a variety of the sudsy stuff. But you'll need to stay within the beer gardens if you want to drink.
One, at the Pavilion Stage, is on Union Square in the center of the fine crafts area. The stage, with all-day entertainment, is under the same tent.
The second beer garden is nearer the Main Stage on the easternmost edge of the festival grounds, between North Center Street and First Street, NW. It extends all the way to the stage so you won't have to put down the beer to enjoy the tunes.

The uninvited few
Sure, your puppy likes funnel cake, too. And maybe he's the best-behaved dog in four counties. But he's not invited to Oktoberfest. No pets are allowed in the festival area.

The altruism
Students from Hickory-area schools have been collecting food since mid-September for the annual Castle of Cans.
Boy Scout Troop 903 constructs the castle in the Kidfest area Saturday morning.
You can help by adding a can to the collection Saturday or Sunday. Can't make the festival? No problem. Castle of Cans organizers have bins at Food Lion grocery stores in Catawba County.
In demand are pop-top cans for the homeless and large cans for area soup kitchens.
All of the food will go to area food pantries and soup kitchens.
Last year, the Castle of Cans brought in more than 10 tons of food. This year, soup kitchens report they are serving more than twice as many meals and food pantries are facing similar shortfalls.

The pursuit
The Oktoberfest footrace, a 5K run/walk and 10K run, benefits the Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry.
10K participants pay $25 and 5k runners and walkers pay $20 to register.
Race packets are available Saturday from 6 to 7:30 a.m. at the start/finish line near the corner of Main Avenue, NW, and Center Street.
This year's race has chip timing. All participants will get a computer chip to attach to a running shoe.
Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry has Catawba County's only free clinic and pharmacy for uninsured residents. It also provides crisis assistance, a food pantry, a thrift store and a shower ministry.
