1. Carolina Chocolate Drops in concert: Put on your dancing shoes. You'll need them when this string band comes through Morganton this weekend. The young black trio strives to preserve the tradition of fiddle and banjo music.

2. Oktoberfest: Downtown Hickory's annual festival offers non-stop music on five stages all weekend long.
Location: Downtown Hickory, centered in Union Square
Cost: Free
Time/Day: Now until 11:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday

3. Library book sale: Have a spine. A three-day book sale helps clean out library storerooms and raise money for purchases and programs. It's for members only tonight but memberships are available at the door.
Location: Patrick Beaver Memorial Library, 375 Third St., NE, Hickory.
Cost: Books cost anywhere from 50 cents to $2. Sunday, you can fill a bag for $3.
Time/Day: 4 to 7 tonight, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday

4. Molasses Festival: This'll be sweet. The festival features bluegrass and dancing, molasses and apple butter making, hayrides and more.
Location: Sim's Country Bar-B-Que, 6160 Petra Mill Road, Granite Falls.
Cost: Free
Time/Day: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday

5. Cat show: Here, kitty kitty. The All-breed and Household Pet Cat Show creeps through Hickory. Expect 200 pedigreed pussycats.
Location: Park Inn Conference Center, 909 U.S. 70, SW, Hickory
Cost: $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and kids under 12
Time/Day: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
