HICKORY - It wasn't the start he wanted, but the finish was perfect for Hickory High head soccer coach Brian Jillings Wednesday night.
"There was certainly a lot of motivation for us," Jillings said after the Red Tornadoes stormed into St. Stephens High and took away a 2-1 win over the Indians.
Hickory (21-1, 9-1 Northwestern 3A-4A) took the lead in the conference standings with its come-from-behind victory.
The Red Tornadoes fell behind early after St. Stephens' midfielder Cody Solesbee turned a corner kick into an Indian goal less than nine minutes into the contest.
St. Stephens (15-5-2, 9-2) held the one-goal margin for the remainder of the first half, due in part to four saves from goalkeeper Hunter Rigsby.
"They have a great goalkeeper, and he made some point-blank saves against us," Jillings said.
"Even though it was their third game in three nights — which is hard on anybody — I've got to give them credit, they're tough."
Unfortunately for the Indians, their toughness couldn't offset a free kick goal from Hickory midfielder Taylor Walker 10 minutes into the second half.
"(Rigsby) took away several good shots we had at him," Jillings said.
"Taylor put himself in the right place at the right time, and made a brilliant strike."
The Red Tornadoes needed a win to have a shot at capturing the league crown, and Ben Underwood's go-ahead goal at the seven-minute mark provided the outcome Jillings had hoped for.
St. Stephens head coach Chuck Davis was pleased with his team's effort, but wasn't happy with how his team's hard work resulted in their second consecutive defeat.
"(The Indians) played their butts off, they pressured the ball, and they played good defense," Davis said.
"We deserved a better result than what we got."
St. Stephens is "a well-coached team," Jillings said, "but I've got to hand it to the leadership our guys showed.
"Our goalkeeper, Julian Deutsch and our forward Drake Fisher, really helped us out a lot."
Deutsch finished with four saves on the night and bounced back from the early Indians goal to shut out St. Stephens in the second half.
"Julian was disappointed in himself when he allowed that goal," Jillings said, "but he stepped up when we needed him and got the job done.
"I can't be any prouder of my team," he added.
"We've got two more games in the regular season, and we're going to take each one as it comes."
