RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina operation of the liberal activist group ACORN has laid off all eight of its employees following a scandal that rocked the group's national office and crimped funding.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday that the staffers laid off by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now have kept working as unpaid volunteers. The nonprofit has offices in Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Greensboro.

ACORN's work includes helping homeowners struggling with mortgage payments under projects supported by Bank of America and Citi.

Congress has cut off much of the national organization's federal funding after hidden-camera videos appeared to show ACORN workers in other states encouraging illegal behavior.
