MORGANTON - Save yourself $8 this Thursday and take in a free movie, food and discussion at Western Piedmont Community College's International Film Festival.

The Film and Fine Arts club and the Global Education Committee will show "Turtles Can Fly," the first film made in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein, in Leviton Auditorium at 6 p.m.

Food, respective of the area and a discussion about the film, will follow afterward, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences Mary Charlotte Safford said.

"Turtles Can Fly" follows 13-year-old Satellite, a boy who installs dishes and antennae for local villages looking for news of Saddam Hussein.

Satellite is the leader of the children and organizes the sweeping and clearing of the minefields.

The film is set in a Kurdish refugee camp on the border of Iraq and Turkey on the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

This is the second film WPCC will show as part of their film festival. The first film, "Motorcycle Diaries" was shown in December.

GEC Chair Maureen Dougher said the Film and Fine Arts club originated the idea for the festival and chose the first two films.

In February, the festival will present "Like Water for Chocolate," due to some of the students at WPCC traveling to Mexico this summer, Dougher said.

"Born in Brothels," a documentary about children born in Calcutta, India brothels, was chosen because March is National Women's History month, Dougher said.

Safford said the purpose of the festival is to show films that aren't mainstream but relevant.
