  • New state law to affect where inmates are housed

    When courts are back in session on Tuesday, some people convicted of misdemeanors may serve time in county jails rather than state prison because of a new state law that goes into effect on Sunday. House Bill 642, which is state law 192 from the 2011 session, says people who are convicted of misdemeanors that are sentenced to 90 to 180 days in jail — three to six months — might serve their time in county jails if their county agrees to the program. Felonies and DWI offenses are excluded. If someone is convicted of a misdemeanor and sentenced to more than 180 days, they will go to the NC Department of Correction for processing.

  • 3 arrested in Bethlehem Elementary playground fire

    Three teenagers have been arrested in the fire that scorched and ruined Bethlehem Elementary School’s playground. The fire department was called at about 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 3 to the elementary school off NC 127. When it arrived, the wooden playground equipment behind the school was on fire, and much of the rubber mulch at the base of the equipment was also charred. The fire was extinguished, but none of the equipment was salvageable.

  • Victims identified in Taylorsville wreck

    The NC Highway Patrol has released the cause of a car crash on Friday morning that killed two people. Kyzer Wilfong, 23, was driving a Subaru east on Millersville Road just before 8 a.m., said Trooper RV McGee with the Highway Patrol. He was on his way to work when he fell asleep at the wheel, McGee said.

  • Altercation with suspect sends deputy to the hospital

    An Alexander County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering at home from injuries he sustained responding to a breaking-and-entering call Tuesday evening. At about 6:50 p.m. the communications center received a call about a breaking-and-entering in progress on Open Way Drive. Although Deputy Roger Moose was off-duty, he was near the area, so he told communications that he would respond, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. On-duty officers also responded to the call, however Moose arrived first.

  • Two arrested for stealing from marina

    Two people have been arrested for thefts of boating equipment at a marina during the last two weeks and more charges are expected, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. Boyfriend and girlfriend Nicholas Paul Bowman and Cynthia Gail Proctor have been charged with stealing a boat motor from a marina along Lake Hickory, said Capt. Keith Warren with the sheriff’s office. He said the sheriff’s office initially received information about the theft of boat parts from Crime Stoppers.

  • Stony Point man charged with rape of a child

    Shawn Adam Meredith, 24, of Stony Point, was arrested Wednesday by Alexander County deputies and charged with the first-degree rape of a child.

  • Bomb threat bank robber busted

    Hickory police nabbed a bank robbery suspect accused of two bank heists in a span of four days. They spotted him less than 20 minutes after the Taylorsville Savings Bank in Bethlehem was robbed Thursday morning.

  • 3 busted for meth production in Alexander County

    Three people were arrested after the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office received a tip about methamphetamine being sold from a house. Officers went to a home on Liberty Lane on Friday. When they arrived, they found a working meth lab at the house. “We went to the house to investigate and there was a bonfire in the backyard,” said Kelly Ward, a narcotics officer with the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. “They had already made one batch and were preparing to make another.”

  • Tornadoes confirmed in Caldwell and Alexander counties

    After spending Thursday evaluating storm damage, meteorologists from the National Weather Service made an announcement Friday: A pair of tornadoes tore through Caldwell and Alexander counties early Thursday morning.

    The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a couple after a family member found them dead in their home. Angela Rose and Kenneth Mellon lived together at 1078 Antioch Church Road. A family member came to the house at about 10:30 p.m. on Monday and found the couple dead from gunshot wounds, said Tod Jones, chief deputy with the sheriff’s office.

  • Deputies find drugs found under child's car seat

    A woman is accused of almost hitting a school bus full of students with her truck, as well as concealing drugs underneath her child’s car seat. The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a possible impaired driver on Pine Cove Road in Taylorsville at about 2:45 p.m. on March 16. The caller said the driver of the Ford F150 pickup truck almost hit a school bus head-on, according to the sheriff’s office. When two deputies pulled the truck over they saw a 2-year-old in a car seat that wasn’t installed properly. When the deputy moved the car seat, two bottles fell out from under it, said Sheriff Chris Bowman.

  • Couple pleads guilty in 2009 murderView Video

    An Alexander County couple pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the murder of a Taylorsville woman. The couple was caught with the woman’s body in their car as they were driving across Virginia in 2009. Jerry Dameron pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, in exchange for life in prison without parole. Lisa Damron pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, receiving a sentence of 12 years to 15 years and two months for her role in the murder.
