    The North Carolina Highway Patrol is hoping for information about a Chevrolet Impala Super Sport involved in a hit-and-run on Saturday. Timothy Huffman, 21, got off his shift at Walmart at about 6 a.m. on Saturday to go to his home in Granite Falls, said Trooper D.W. Church. Wearing a reflective vest, he was driving his mo-ped in the right lane of US 321 north when he was struck by a driver at about 6:35 a.m.

  • Pair arrested on drug charges

    Two men were arrested Wednesday on drug charges after the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office received information about a meth house on Collettsville Road. The sheriff’s office’s ICE unit went to the house and confronted Glenn Spencer Boyette Jr., 36, and Timothy Howard White Jr., 31. The pair allowed the investigators to search the house and found items often used to make methamphetamine, according to the sheriff’s office.

  • New firm bringing 150 jobs to Lenoir

    With an unemployment rate that has been consistently one of the highest in the region, Caldwell County will soon welcome a company that plans to bring new jobs. Carolina Prime Pets, which is currently located in Murphy and makes dog treats, plans to relocate to Lenoir and hire up to 150 workers within the next two years, according to information from Caldwell County.

  • New state law to affect where inmates are housed

    When courts are back in session on Tuesday, some people convicted of misdemeanors may serve time in county jails rather than state prison because of a new state law that goes into effect on Sunday. House Bill 642, which is state law 192 from the 2011 session, says people who are convicted of misdemeanors that are sentenced to 90 to 180 days in jail — three to six months — might serve their time in county jails if their county agrees to the program. Felonies and DWI offenses are excluded. If someone is convicted of a misdemeanor and sentenced to more than 180 days, they will go to the NC Department of Correction for processing.

    The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office ICE Unit arrested Barbara Hartsell Tuesday for falsifying a prescription for Oxycodone. Hartsell is accused of presenting a prescription for 90 pills of Oxycodone to a pharmacy in Lenoir in October, which filled it, according to the sheriff’s office.

    A Hudson man is facing nine felony charges after investigators say he stole thousands of prescription pain pills while working in a grocery store. Roy Jonathan Cook worked as a stocker for the third shift at Ingles on Connelly Springs Road, said Sgt. David Barbour with the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office. He became a suspect in an investigation after the store’s loss prevention officer found large amounts of hydrocodone pills missing from inside the store pharmacy and matched it with lapses in the pharmacy’s security camera recording and dates the pills were found missing, according to the sheriff’s office. The pills were likely taken on Oct. 30, Nov. 15 and Dec. 5.
