Timothy Huffman, 21, got off his shift at Walmart at about 6 a.m. on Saturday to go to his home in Granite Falls, said Trooper D.W. Church. Wearing a reflective vest, he was driving his mo-ped in the right lane of US 321 north when he was struck by a driver at about 6:35 a.m.

  • More charges against Hickory man accused of multistate thefts

    A man accused of stealing cars and utility trailers from several states was charged with two more felonies Wednesday after someone came forward with additional information about stolen property. Frederick Washburn, 48, was arrested by Hickory police on Friday and charged with 12 felonies relating to stolen property and larceny for the theft of property from several states. On Wednesday, the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office charged him with possession of stolen goods and possession of a stolen vehicle after a local boat repairman recognized Washburn in the media. Washburn is accused of stealing a $48,500 Supra wake boat and a 26-foot Boatmate Trailer housed at business in Cornelius, said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.

    When someone runs from the law, they may think they’ll only be faced with their problems in the courtroom if they get caught. What they may not realize is there are now other consequences, as well. The state legislature passed law 271 during the 2011 session, referred to as Run and You’re Done, which went into effect Dec. 1. Anyone charged with felony speed to elude arrest from law enforcement will have the car they’re driving seized. If they’re convicted of the charge, it can be sold at auction with the proceeds going to area schools. The law is designed to cut down on the number of people who flee police, eliminating high-speed chases that endanger themselves and others.
