  • Catawba County health department says some should get vaccinated

    State and local health officials are encouraging people to get vaccinated for pertussis, commonly known as whopping cough, due to an increase of cases in the state. And local health care providers who participate in the North Carolina Immunizations Program, including Catawba County Public Health, are authorized to provide the vaccine — Tdap — for free.

    The Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground is not the only way the Kiwanis Clubs inCatawbaCountyare honoring a child that has come to mean so much to the residents of the region. A scholarship will be established in her name, as well. Area Kiwanis Clubs used to loan money to students so they could attend college. Several years ago that was done away with and the Hickory Kiwanis Foundation was established, said Steve Aaron, a member of the Western Catawba Kiwanis club and the steering committee chair for the playground. About $700,000 is in the fund for college scholarships, given to students on a needs-basis. None of the scholarships are awarded strictly to students who are disabled, however.

TheSt.Stephens High School JROTC program is taking its role one step further by having its cadets mentor students at Snow Creek Elementary once a week. The program with the JROTC students began at Clyde Campbell Elementary, and resumed at Snow Creek once the school opened three years ago. The Naval Science 1 and 2 students are bussed to the school for about an hour on Wednesdays and help students who are handpicked by teachers and guidance counselors, said Ellen Sigmon, media coordinator for Snow Creek Elementary.

    Many children get the chance to dream big and grow up to be who they want. There are many others, though, who don’t have that opportunity and suffer abuse at the hands of an adult. The Children’s Advocacy and Protection Council is hoping to reduce that number, drawing attention to it during April’s child abuse prevention month. “Children and youth development is the foundation for economic development,” said Deborah Johnson, director of the Children’s Advocacy and Protection Council.

    One of the two 16-year-old girls indicted in the murder of cab driver Adam Williams hid the getaway car while two others robbed and killed him, according to a prosecutor with the district attorney’s office. Emily Starnes, 16, was in Catawba County Superior Court Tuesday morning for a bond reduction hearing. She is charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and obstruction of justice in the death of Williams, 32, in August 2011. Four others are charged in connection with the crime. Of those, three are charged with murder and several other charges, and one person is charged with accessory after the fact.

Mayfield, 42, was in Catawba County Superior Court Monday on five felony charges that stem from a search warrant that was executed at his Catawba home in November. He is facing one count of possession of methamphetamine for 1.5 grams officers found in his home, three counts of possession of stolen goods and one count of obtaining property by false pretenses. He is facing additional charges inCaldwellCountyfor four counts of larceny for the theft of four trailers.
