    Jeter A. “Andy” Barker, the founder, longtime mayor, heart and soul of the town of Love Valley, died Thursday morning at a local hospice. He was 87.

    Law enforcement believes a man died Saturday night after getting out of his pickup truck, which was stuck on the side of the road. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office was called about an injured person at 4700 Bills Lane at about 9:15 p.m., said Detective B.J. Fore.

  • Lenoir man arrested on meth charge

    A man was arrested in Lenoir Monday and charged with operating a methamphetamine lab. Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office charged Randy Allen Bentley, 47, of 3000 Harper Court No. 2, Lenoir, with one felony count of manufacture of methamphetamine, said Sheriff Alan Jones.

  • Teen charged with arson in Granite Falls apartment fireView Video

    A teenager was charged with arson more than a month after a fire that destroyed three apartments and damaged a fourth. Granite Falls police say Dalton Huffstetler, 16, started a fire in the living room of the apartment he shared with his mother and older brother on May 31. At 10:30 p.m. that night, Huffstetler’s mother was home asleep. His older brother was at a friend’s house, said Sgt. Roger Crosby with the Granite Falls Police Department. There were 10 other people in the surrounding three apartments. All escaped before the fire spread.

    Accused hydrocodone trafficker, Robert Lee Curtis Jr., 55, of Granite Falls was arrested following an undercover investigation by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office’ Inner-county Counterdrug Enforcement unit, better known as Ice.

    A Lenoir man was arrested Thursday and charged with six counts of trafficking in prescription pills following an undercover investigation by the Caldwell County Inner-County Counter-Drug Enforcement, better known as the ICE Unit.

    When Kim Alboum recently came to Caldwell County Animal Control to help them with the hundreds of animals it seized from a breeder, she knew she couldn’t leave the shelter without offering additional help. “We would be remiss to leave the county without focusing our resources on the shelter,” said Alboum, the North Carolina director for the Humane Society of the United States. “A grant paid for the (puppy mill dogs’) care, but all these people wanted to help.” Caldwell County Animal Control busted a kennel that was suspected of breeding dogs in a large-scale operation three weeks ago, and the community praised the organization for its quick actions.

  • Two arrested for stealing from marina

    Two people have been arrested for thefts of boating equipment at a marina during the last two weeks and more charges are expected, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. Boyfriend and girlfriend Nicholas Paul Bowman and Cynthia Gail Proctor have been charged with stealing a boat motor from a marina along Lake Hickory, said Capt. Keith Warren with the sheriff’s office. He said the sheriff’s office initially received information about the theft of boat parts from Crime Stoppers.
