Patrick McHenry graced us with a quarter-page pat on the back sponsored by the "Growth Options for the 21st Century." Turns out this is a pretty name for the railroad industry.
I have no real problem with the railroad folks, but it turns out (using their own words) that in a time of their rising stock prices and booming demand for their services, they want Congress (that's us, folks} to give them money to expand.
Somehow that just doesn't seem right to me, but you can bet your bottom dollar that McHenry will vote to give it to them. You can read how they want to convince you that toxic spills aren't all that bad at www.go21.org.
Maybe it's me, but the days of the railroad barons reminds me to be cautious with these folks.

No right to proselytize, make false allegations
Free exercise of religion, with no interference from the federal government as conferred by the First Amendment, does not confer the right to proselytize in the public square.
No one will interfere with the practice of religion in a place of worship, a home or on the premises of those of like mind.
To presume otherwise is pure arrogance.
Neither does the First Amendment confer the right to any citizen to make a speech or print unsupported allegations against another citizen.
Those who have made many such allegations against Patrick McHenry are now called on to support their allegation with facts.

Citizens Academy an eye-opening experience
I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the community-serving men and women employed by the Hickory Police Department.
I graduated from the Hickory Police Department's Citizens Police Academy, a three-month program meeting one evening each week.
The focus of the session was to educate and inform local citizens concerning the crucial role of the police department and familiarize participants with the general laws and procedures of the department.
I encourage all citizens to attend this outstanding program!
I received training from some of the finest professional law enforcement officers I have ever known. I have known many! Hickory Chief of Police Tom Adkins is a man who is deeply involved and committed to serving the community, overseeing departmental training, office procedures, traffic control, and all phases of criminal activities. He was greatly involved with this endeavor.
Our class instructor, Sgt. Keith Yoder, (a third-generation officer) was an exceptional teacher.
Hats off to the officers, I rode with, because it was tremendous to see what goes on behind the headlines.
Sitting at home, peacefully in front of our televisions, we often forget the efforts and self-sacrifice of the dedicated men and women employed by our local police departments, and who continually contribute to our well-being.
To the community, it is in your best interest to be informed and to attend the program from beginning to end.
And, for all the past attendees, isn't it high-time we put together an Alumni Association, where we can form a community support group, volunteer and encourage others to take advantage of the Citizens Academy?

Must be many solutions to energy problems
There must be many solutions considered for lowering the price of fuel and heating oils, etc.
Some are opening up the offshore drilling in limited areas, drilling in Alaska, and most importantly by being more consumer conservative with consolidation of trips, keeping our cars fine-tuned, buying smaller or more efficient vehicles, and using alternate fuels.
