Catawba County residents have the opportunity this month to meet some of the candidates vying for U.S. House and Senate, governor and lieutenant governor in the Nov. 4 election.

Candidates representing Catawba County will speak at a candidates' forum at the Hickory Metro Convention Center on Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Sponsored by the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce, candidates for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, the state governor and the state lieutenant governor's positions were invited to speak at the business expo at the convention center.

Democratic candidate Daniel Johnson and incumbent Republican candidate Patrick McHenry, both seeking the 10th district congressional seat, have committed to attend. Current Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, who is facing Democrat Beverly Perdue for the governor's seat in November, will also speak. Perdue has said she won't attend, although she can still change her mind, said Michael McNally, vice president of government affairs and business development with the Chamber.

Democratic Senate candidate Kay Hagan said she would not be able to attend. Incumbent Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole has not committed or declined, McNally said.

Republican Robert Pittenger, who is running for lieutenant governor, will speak at the forum. Democrat Walter Dalton said he would not attend, although he is still invited.

Candidates will have five to seven minutes to speak about whatever they'd like before answering questions from the Chamber, followed by questions from the audience.
