Jon Kanupp got to meet someone he looks up to Friday when 10th District Congressman Patrick McHenry visited H.M. Arndt Middle School.
McHenry visited the school to give the students and staff a N.C. flag and an American flag that flew over the state capitol in Raleigh. Principal David Fonseca said the flags would be kept on display in the school's lobby.
McHenry presented the flags to seventh-grader Kanupp, who met McHenry this summer when he and his mother attended a dinner McHenry spoke at.
"I didn't know him before that, but I was excited to meet a congressman," Kanupp said.
He had his photo taken with McHenry at the dinner, which McHenry mailed to him about a week later, signing it, "Jon — keep up the good work in school. Your Congressman, Patrick McHenry."
Kanupp brought the photo to show McHenry on Friday, and had another photo taken with McHenry.
Kanupp said he's a fan of McHenry's now and he plans to vote in Kids Voting, a mock election that lets students cast their ballot for who they would vote for if they were 18.
While at Arndt Middle, McHenry also filmed a short video spot for the school, discussing the flags he presented to Kanupp for the school. McHenry encouraged students to make wise choices while in school.
"The most important thing is to make good decisions. From the friends you keep to the clubs you're in," he said.
Catawba County Schools Superintendent Tim Markley said having McHenry visit schools was an important civics lesson for students, one that can't be learned from books.
"It's important for our students to see who represents them," he said. "Civics is more than what's in the textbook."
Markley also took a few minutes to speak with McHenry about fuel prices in the area and where Catawba County gets its fuel.
