We endorse: For Congress

Our Voice

We urge voters in the 10th Congressional District to vote for change on Nov. 4, and Daniel Johnson represents the change this district and America needs today.

Johnson is a man driven by values he learned while growing up in Hickory and Catawba County. Those values will continue to guide him if he is elected to Congress.

Johnson has consistently shown service to others is more important to him than advancing his own self-interests.

While serving in the U.S. Navy, Johnson risked his life to save a fellow serviceman. Johnson and the sailor survived, but Johnson lost both of his legs below the knee. Johnson received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, the highest peacetime medal for heroism.

That heroic act is the high point of a life formed by community service and based on integrity. The son of a Presbyterian minister, Johnson learned early in life the importance of the idea of service before self. His valor in the military confirms a lesson learned.

As a state prosecutor, Johnson showed that he is an independent thinker. As a member of Congress, he will do the same.

We give the Republican candidate high marks for constituent service, availability and delivering on a promise to open a needed veteran's clinic in Hickory. But that is not enough in these uncertain times. When the country was on the brink of economic ruin, he stuck with Republican Party extremists and voted against a $700 billion bailout to help stabilize our struggling financial markets.

We need independent-thinking candidates who will not be guided by their own political aspirations.

Democrat Daniel Johnson is the best choice to represent our 10th Congressional District in Washington, D.C.
