A performing arts center in the North Carolina mountains that's been open about three years is temporarily closing because of the economy.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported the interim executive director of the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock has also resigned.

Center officials said in a news release Tuesday that the center will be closed for "a limited period of time." They indicated they hope the center will reopen prior to next year's summer season.

The resignation of the interim executive director and producing artistic director, Kenneth Kay, takes effect Sept. 8, after the close of stage show "Hank Williams: Lost Highway." The musical biography, a production of the Blowing Rock Stage Company, opens Aug. 21 and ends its run Sept. 6.
