THUMBS UP to the Soldiers Reunion, one of the grandest, most popular events in our area. The reunion is a tribute to everyone who has served in all branches of the military. It is a poignant time, especially on parade day (always Thursday), but there is a lot of fun, too. The cruise-in is Sunday night when people get to drive their vintage cars and hang out downtown. Of course, if you don't have a classic set of wheels, you're still welcome. That's the way it is throughout the week. The events always attract a crowd. We cannot forget, however, that the focus is the service of our men and women in the military. They make us proud. We show them gratitude for protecting our great nation. There will be lots of activity and laughter during Soldiers Reunion week. We should reflect on our defenders' commitment to duty and their sacrifice for our welfare and freedom. There are no more veterans from World War I who will partake in the festivities. Our heroes from World War II and Korea are fewer every day. And when you see someone who served in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan or who participated in actions such as Panama, Grenada and the strike against Libya — express your appreciation. Everyone who fights, who stands guard, who keeps the machinery running, who cooks, who pushes paper and maintains critical communication — all are necessary for our freedom to remain secure. This year's Soldiers Reunion theme is "We salute you, veterans." So we shall. To all, have fun, and remember.
THUMBS UP to the Egyptian crew members who fought back against their Somali pirate captors and escaped from a four-month ordeal. The crew overpowered the pirates and used machetes and tools to win their freedom. We do not enjoy celebrating violence, but the pirates brought their fate upon themselves. The Egyptian sailors killed at least two of the brigands before sailing away. This is the way to deal with the pirates who have turned the seas red with blood. Their violence should be returned with interest. Sadly, it is the only way to deal with those who kill without compunction. They take some hostages in hopes of trading for more loot or making their criminal trade easier. Congratulations to the Egyptian sailors for fighting back. More such mettle should be demonstrated.
THUMBS DOWN to the pirates who stole freedom of speech from the Library of Congress. Threats forced the cancellation of a lecture by Lyndie England, on the central figures in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal. We are not included to go to bat for the former reservist, but we do support the right of free speech. Threats against the library staff could not be dismissed. The conduct at Abu Ghraib was despicable. It cannot be tolerated, and neither can the hijacking of freedom.
