School starts today, and Hickory police plan to step up patrols to ensure children are safe.
"We have road patrols in school areas year-round, but they are stepped up on Tuesday until people get used to the increased traffic flow with school starting," said Maj. Clyde Deal, with the Hickory Police Department.
Police will be driving in all school zones around schools in the morning and afternoon when children will be dropped off and picked up, looking for drivers who are practicing unsafe traffic movements and speeding, Deal said. They will also be looking for people who pass stopped school buses and crosswalk violations.
Hickory police will use speed trailers and radar around school zones, Deal said.
"We want to make sure the school year gets off to a good, safe start, so people will see an increased police presence," he said.
One road that is known to have problems in N.C. 127. Deal said the road is congested on most days, but if bus traffic is added to the mix, as well as parents dropping off and picking up their children, it can make the road more congested. He encouraged drivers to pay extra attention today, as well as the rest of this week, as they get back in the habit of seeing school-related traffic on the road.
