N.C. Department of Transportation officials said U.S. 321 north of the Lenoir should reopen today.
The highway has been closed due to the threat of rock slides.
The stretch of highway between Kirby Mountain Road and Waterfalls Road in Caldwell County was temporarily closed because of a rock slide on Dec. 4.
The contractor in charge of the widening project, with DOT officials in agreement, decided the threat of more rock slides was so severe that the road was closed Dec. 7 for more blasting and rock removal.
The section is part of a widening project between Lenoir and Blowing Rock.
DOT officials say the highway is not expected to reopen until late afternoon today.
The damaged part of the 6.6-mile section will be paved this morning, weather permitting.
Travelers should check the road's status at www.ncdot.org/traffictravel/ or at www.visitnc.com or call 511 and follow the prompts.
The DOT also plans to use its message boards on U.S. 321 to inform motorists of the highway's condition.
To keep traffic flowing through the holidays, the DOT has asked the contractor to halt routine blasting until Jan. 5.
