Connelly Springs man killed in construction accident

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A Connelly Springs man died at a construction site Thursday morning when he fell in a hole and dirt collapsed around him.

Chris Parkhurst, 30, died at a sewer line construction site near Shelby. He was working for Neill Grading Co. of Hickory.

Workers dug Parkhurst out and Emergency Medical Services workers took him to Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 10:02 a.m., about an hour after the accident.

One witness, Jamie Lee of Taylorsville, told a Cleveland County sheriff's deputy he was changing some equipment when he heard a construction foreman yell out that Parkhurst had fallen into the hole.

According to the deputy's report, workers were not ready to put a pipe in the hole, "so they couldn't figure out why the victim was in the area where he was."

The sheriff's report also lists Darrell Shawn Whisenant of Lenoir as a witness.

An investigator from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration also was summoned to the site.
